When Dr. Ferry Porsche couldn't find the car of his dreams, he built it himself. That was 60 years ago- but now the original, mid-engine 'Porsche No.1' sports car will be displayed at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
The special occasion takes place in conjunction with the carmakers 60th anniversary, and it's the first time the machine has made a trip to North America- though it's actually the second time it's tried. On Porsche's 50th anniversary, the special car was damaged in Chicago on its way to California.
No problems are expected for this trip, and the original Porsche model has already played a key role in anniversary celebrations at Porsches American headquarters in Atlanta.
The starting-block of Porsche's design philosophy was powered by a tuned up 1.31 liter Volkswagen engine with air cooling and increased compression, to generate about 35 horsepower. The engine was mated to a four-speed gearbox, and both proved lightweight and reliable, Porsche says. The car also featured a worm-gear steering system and cable-operated brakes. The interior featured a tachometer, as well as a three-person bench seat.
Visitors to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance can check out the Porsche No.1 when it opens later this month.
