A new study by Hyundai in the U.K. reveals that the major gas hikes over the past five years have had a significant impact on family reunions.
Thirty percent of Brits said that they cannot afford to visit their parents, while 6 in 10 families have missed out on the traditional Sunday Roast. Even worse, 1 in 10 had to cut Christmas visits due to the higher gas prices.
According to the study, the average family in the U.K. spends $1,181 and travels 1,720 kilometres to visit relatives every year. However, 2 in 5 drivers are ruling out any kind of trip to see relatives living over 240 kilometres away. In addition, 35% said that they cut back on family nights out to pay for fuel, while 14% even admitted to cutting back on food.
You can probably apply these numbers to most industrialized countries, where gas is similarly expensive.
