It seems like a match made in heaven--the reliable and efficient torque of a diesel powerplant married with the marvelous rotational smoothness of a boxer style engine.
If there's one company who knows a thing or two about boxer engines, it's Subaru. Every vehicle they make has one, because when the pistons fire at the tires, good things happen in terms of balance, centre of gravity and overall roadhandling.
A few months back, Subaru Europe President Hiroyuki Ikeda announced, to the surprise of many, that they had developed a new diesel engine and that it was nearly completed. Ikeda said, "the adoption of a thin journal for the crankshaft and turbo charger placed under the cylinder block enhances all the advantages of the Boxer Engine, which are a low center of gravity, low vibration, high rigidity and compactness."
Recently, he took the stage at the Geneva autoshow to give the public it's first glimpse of the new engine. A 2.0-litre unit, it's set to find its way into some 2008 models. Apparently, there may even be a 3.0-litre engine introduced later for the Tribeca, though plans are unclear as to whether either mill will find their under Canadian hoods.
