If you've been following the auto shows this year, you've likely noticed that diesel technology looks like it's set to be huge in North America in the near future.

Though it's largely German automakers bringing their diesel-powered machinery to North America, Subaru has just announced that they'll be sending theirs to Europe.

The world's first horizontally opposed diesel engine has been fitted to the Legacy and Outback models in 2.0D trim. The pair will be introduced publicly at the 78th Geneva Motor Show.

The boxer configuration is especially fitting for a diesel engine in a number of ways. As the pistons counteract each other, vibrations common to diesel engines are cancelled out. The turbocharger can be mounted beneath the block too, aiding in a lower centre of gravity for the car.

The engine is attached to Subaru's symmetrical AWD system, and the cars are promised to deliver on Subaru's promise of stability and performance.

It's all achieved while meeting strict Euro 4 emissions requirements, thanks to careful work to ensur clean and efficient operation. In all, the new diesel engine delivers smooth and refined operation while delivering 150 horsepower and about 260 lb.-ft of torque.

It goes on sale in Europe ahead of other world markets.
