Safety behind the wheel has taken on a whole new dimension with the introduction of the smartphone. Many an accident now results in the use of this new breed of device. Whether you’re sending or receiving a text message, keeping up with your friends’ lives on Facebook, writing a note on Twitter or just making a simple phone call (remember those?), one second of distraction is all it takes.

Given the recent wave of technology-induced road incidents, several Canadian provinces have decided to take action and have passed bills to attempt to curb distracted driving. Are you still itching to tweet, e-mail or text behind the wheel despite the new legislation? The SuperTooth HD may be the solution for you.

A handsfree speakerphone, the SuperTooth HD stands out by its ability to interact on the social media networks using simple voice commands. It all happens with the HandsFree Assistant, which also allows you to send text messages and e-mails.

The SuperTooth HD attaches to your sunshade with a magnetic clip. Make sure to read the instructions first, so that the microphone points in the right direction, i.e. at you. About the size of a smartphone, it doesn’t really hinder the driver.

Other than the voice command system, the device features three buttons: a power button, a HandsFree Assistant button, and a volume control button. The SuperTooth HD includes two microphones, a noise cancellation feature and two speakers. The battery can last up to 1,000 hours in standby mode.

Connecting the SuperTooth HD to your phone is very simple. The first time you turn it on, it asks you to choose between six languages, British English, American English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Then, using your phone’s Bluetooth options you can sync both devices together. The SuperTooth HD will let you know when it’s connected. It’s pretty straightforward from there, and the instructions are clear. The SuperTooth HD can be paired with up to eight devices, but only two at the same time.

To activate voice command, hold the volume control button down for one second. There are around 15 different commands available, including “Answer,” “Reject,” and “Ignore.” Although the SuperTooth HD speaks six languages, it only understands two, English and French.

After having used the SuperTooth HD in my car for a few weeks, I have nothing bad to say about its basic call placing and receiving functions. Sound quality and noise cancellation are flawless. What I have trouble with is the HandsFree Assistant. It works great to send e-mails or text messages, either in English or French, but as for reading our messages or Facebook/Twitter posts back to us, it’s a complete disaster. I could only understand about one word out of 10 and couldn’t follow it at all.

The HandsFree Assistant service is ok, but it could be better. It’s free for the first six months, and after that SuperTooth offers two packages, Basic and Pro. The Basic package costs $39.99US/year (or $3.99 USD/month) while the Pro version will set you back $59.99US/year (or $5.99US/month). So basically you’ve got six months to determine the SuperTooth HD’s usefulness.

Overall, I quite liked the SuperTooth HD. It’s not the best handsfree speakerphone system on the market, but its HandsFree Assistant and magnetic clip make it a versatile one. You can use it when working on your car, for instance. When you receive a call, simply say “Answer” and voilà!, no need to wipe your greasy hands clean or risk damaging your phone.
