The Unitus Racing team, from the James Madison Middle School and Southeast High School, in the United States, received the title of 2010 World Champions of the F1 in Schools contest, in Singapour, on Wednesday.

Team Manager, Amanda Clark, and her teammates, Niemann Pest, Mark Nanney, Tony Griffin, Brandon Miranda and Yatrik Solandi, all under 19, were not sure they had what it got to win this 2010 edition.

“This was a total surprise. Our goal was to be in the top ten, as we knew we had been consistent in the various different judging categories. At the end, when they called the third and second placed teams we thought we had come fifth,” said Clark.

It was a return to the victory for team USA. The country had already won one of the first edition of the contest, back in 2004, making it the only team with a double victory so far.

Andrew Denford, Founder and Chairman of F1 in Schools, explained: “Since then the competition has been so tough that it’s taken them six years to reclaim the title. This team excelled by their consistency and attention to detail, putting together top quality work in every element of the competition and this really paid off for them.”

A total of 17 trophies were presented within the 25 competing teams at the Awards ceremony, most of which were attributed to the top-3 teams of the USA, Australia and Germany.

A non-for-profit organisation, F1 in Schools funds are raised through sponsorship and invested in administering, developing and expanding the challenge.

F1 drivers Lucas di Grassi from Virgin Racing and Sauber F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi as well as World Champion Jenson Button from McLaren attended the event. Bernie Ecclestone as well as many other representatives from F1 teams were also present.
