Canada's largest fuel and packaged alcohol producer, GreenField Ethanol (formerly known as Commercial Alcohols), announced that its new ethanol plant in Varennes, Quebec, is now fully operational. The initial capacity will be 120 million litres of fuel grade ethanol per year made from 12 million bushels of Quebec corn.
The Varennes plant is GreenField Ethanol's third in the country, the first two being located in Chatham and Tiverton, Ontario. Meanwhile, construction has already begun for two 200-million litre ethanol producing plants in Johnstown and Hensall, Ontario. With these five facilities, the company will produce over 700 million litres of ethanol annually by 2008, enough to become one of the top producers in North America. The three plants currently in operation should be able to collectively produce more than 250 million litres per year.
Ethanol produced at GreenField Ethanol's Varennes plant will be available at Petro-Canada stations across Quebec, providing consumers with a fuel that is cleaner and more beneficial to the environment. GreenField Ethanol currently supplies more than 1,500 gas stations across Canada.
