BlueMotion is to Volkswagen what Bluetec is to DaimlerChrysler, more precisely Mercedes-Benz: a trademark to identify its cleanest vehicles. The Polo BlueMotion, Volkswagen's first such model, was introduced last summer and its fuel economy was rated at 3.9 L/100 km. In order to provide more choices, the German automaker now offers its customers the Passat BlueMotion, followed by the Golf BlueMotion later this fall.

But let's get back to the Polo. Thanks to a 1.4L 3-cylinder TDI engine, the little hatchback now burns only 3.8 litres of fuel per 100 km, which represents a 3-percent reduction, and produces emissions as low as 99 grams per km. In addition, since the engine generates no less than 144 lb-ft of torque, engineers were able to incorporate a higher differential ratio. And let's not forget about the low wind resistance (0.30 drag rating) and low rolling resistance.

All these reasons explain why the Polo BlueMotion is currently one of the most fuel-efficient cars on the planet.
