After several photos, videos and rumours about its name have been floating out there in cyberspace these past few months, Pagani has finally seen fit to unveil the Huayra, named after Aymara Huayra Tata, god of wind.

When you think Pagani, you think power. And power has definitely been emphasized here: the Huayra is motivated by a 12-cylinder, twin-turbo mill developed by Mercedes-Benz AMG that spits out 700 furious ponies as well as 738 whopping ft-lb of torque and is coupled with a 7-speed, dual-clutch, sequential transmission. The Italian automaker claims this little number can rocket up to 370 km/h and generate 1.5 G of lateral force.

To manage all that furious muscle and get the most out of it, the Huayra counts on a carbon-titanium monocoque structure ensuring optimal stiffness and lightness.

Cooling and air conditioning pipes have been built into the monocoque structure to keep the weight down to a minimum. Despite the gullwing doors, the machine weighs in at 1,350 kg (2,976 lbs), which means it’s a few kilos lighter than a Porsche Carrera GT or Ferrari Enzo.

A pushrod suspension similar to that of the Lamborghini LP700-4, Pirelli P Zero tires and four electronically controlled flaps increase the car’s aerodynamic properties and help keep it glued to the road in the most extreme conditions.

The steering wheel is equipped with two palettes and a dash panel fashioned out of a single piece of aluminum features a multifunction display that provides relevant information in sport mode and a trip computer and comfort mode.

If you like what you see, you’ll be happy to learn that the Huayra meets European and American environmental and safety norm, which may well mean that a Pagani could eventually – and legally – land on North American shores.

One thing is for sure, the Huayra means business.
