Modifications
Millions of trucks on the used market will have common modifications like air intakes and exhaust kits, which provide more sound and a small performance benefit. These modifications are typically considered “safe” if they use high-quality parts and a good installation.

Unless you’re a mechanic or well-experienced in truck tuning, avoid models with extensive modifications to the engine, suspension or drivetrain. Lifted trucks or pickups with modified engine management or extremely large tires and wheels could be problematic in the hands of the wrong owner.

Go stick
If you’re looking at a higher-mileage truck or shopping on a tight budget, some used truck owners, in general, recommend opting for a manual transmission when possible. The reasoning behind this is that changing a clutch is typically far less expensive than changing an automatic transmission which also uses more pricey sensors and computers in its operation. A good ol’ manual box can save you money in the long run.

The undercarriage
It’s a good piece of advice for any used ride, but even more relevant in a pickup: Get it in the air. While on a hoist, your favourite mechanic can inspect the truck you’re considering for signs of excessive rust, dents, scrapes or perforations inflicted on the floor-pan by careless off-roading.

The condition of the tires, suspension and steering system can also be assessed. Ditto for the driveshaft. This is a great time to check for leaks as well. After a few minutes under the truck you’re considering, a mechanic should be able to give you a very good idea of the shape it’s in.

Check the 4x4
If the used pickup truck you’re considering has an electronic 4x4 system that requires pushing a button or turning a dial to engage 4-wheel drive, you’ll want to be absolutely positive it works properly. Switch between the various 4x4 modes as outlined in the owner’s manual, ensuring each one can be engaged and disengaged. Do this several times to be sure. Don’t simply take the seller’s word that the system works properly, as this can be a costly mistake.

Fluids

For maximum peace of mind, seek out a used pickup truck with full service records indicating that it was treated to on-time, high-quality fluid changes, preferably at its selling dealer. If you’re unable to confirm the service history of the model you’re considering, budget for a full fluid change, just to be safe. Your truck will repay you with less component wear and a longer life.
