2. 3rd generation (1984-1987)
Man, what a prolific generation! The marvellous Wonder Civic gave us the Civic CRX, a racy-looking two-seater, as well as the first Civic Si models, much to the delight of performance-craving drivers. At the same time, Honda made the car larger and increased fuel economy. But wait, there’s more: A push-button 4-wheel drive system appeared on the menu. In 1987, engineers arranged for the rear wheels to engage automatically once the front wheels lost traction. That was the beginning of the Real Time all-wheel drive system we know today.
