Late last week, a video featuring Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May at the University of Lincoln, UK hit the web. Their stunt involved students pushing a depleted Nissan LEAF. Electric car advocates immediately cried foul, arguing that it was an elaborate setup similar to the TV show's 2008 evaluation of the Tesla Roadster.

One would assume that Top Gear entertains some form of hate toward these vehicles, but it's not really the case, apparently.

Interviewed by All Cars Electric, Nissan's UK director of communications, Tom Barnard, said: ''Pictures rarely tell the whole story, as is the case here. Top Gear has confirmed to us that the crew intentionally drained the battery to inject suspense into the mission of finding a public charge spot''.

He then added: ''Lincoln is an area renowned for not having any public charging infrastructure. Top Gear does not intend to use the scenes of the car out of charge as an illustration that the claimed range is false''.

Conspiracy theorists should stop barking now.

Essentially, Top Gear's episode will attempt to highlight the difficulties of charging an electric car in a city or area that's known to have no public charging stations.
