Volvo's 2003 XC90 SUV was awarded for its enhanced roll-over and occupant protection system and its advanced collision protection structure, that incorporates protective beams and crumple zones that cause it to directly engage lower car bumpers during a collision rather than over-riding them.
Mercedes-Benz impressed judges due to its new 'brake-by-wire' system, enhancing braking performance of its 2003 SL500. It also received recognition for its 2003 S-Class's preventative, protective safety system and last but hardly least a roll-over and occupant protection system for its 2003 E-Class, 2003 S-Class and 2003 CL-Class.
