at 6,000 rpm and 246 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, through a five-speed automatic.

If the sporty geeks among you are wondering about a manual shifter forthe V-6, there isn't one. Indeed, there's no manual transmission at all on the new RAV4.

Though Wearing's unable at this time to supply details, he wants potential consumers to know that the new RAV4 has a new drivetrain, chassis, electric power steering and suspension, all of which "combine to deliver best-in-segment performance."

On the handling and safety front, technologies of note include:
  • an electronically-controlled Active Torque Control 4-wheel-drive system for excellent traction and fuel efficiency
  • an enhanced Vehicle Stability Control system and Traction Control System, which should help avoid loss-of-control situations and reduce rollover risk
  • an anti-lock braking system with Electric Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist, for more controlled braking and better emergency breaking, respectively
  • Hill-start Assist and Downhill Assist Control standard on V-6 models
  • an optional seven-airbag system that includes dual-stage driver and passenger airbags and a driver's knee airbag.

In terms of comfort, convenience and versatility, Wearing points to:
  • a longer and wider body on a long wheelbase, which creates a larger interior space
  • a "modular" interior with flexible seating and more cargo space, including a second row seat that folds flat, and an optional third-row seat that folds into the cargo floor
  • a best-in-segment drag co-efficient that contributes to "excellent fuel consumption, quiet high-speed running and enhanced stability"
  • "redefined comfort levels" for a sport-cute, including standard illuminated cup holders, dual glove box and foot lighting, plus optional independent driver/passenger side air conditioning with pollen filters, and
  • an audio system with MP3 capability and a mini-jack for iPods and MP3 players.

All of this, Wearing believes, makes RAV4 "an agile urban commuter that is also just as capable for those outings away from the city."

Wearing says RAV4 is "already a favourite with drivers looking for the versatility and urban savvy of a compact SUV." With the new version, "we will once more be providing ample proof to Canadians that Toyota builds trucks that outperform in every situation, whether it's negotiating rough terrain or navigating city streets and urban alleys."
