2:00 PM - Toyota just introduced their new Avalon, and showed off their new crossover concept.
The 2005 Avalon, which should go on sale within the next month or two, is priced from $26,350 US. It will be available in four trim levels, from base Touring to uplevel Limited.
Toyota is proud to say that their new Avalon is more spacious, more luxurious, more refined, more stylish, and more powerful than the model it replaces.
It will be powered by a brand-new 3.5-litre DOHC VVT-i V6 that develops 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission.
Safety features include front airbags, lateral airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags, and a knee airbag for the driver.
The target audience for the 2005 Avalon is baby boomers in their late 50s.
Toyota also showed off the FT-SX Crossover Concept, which is lower than an SUV but taller than a sedan. It is powered by a V6 engine, but no specific details were given.
The FT-SX, Toyota claims, performs like a sports coupe, is as comfortable like a sedan, and is as versatile as a SUV. Its multifunction roof is completely made of glass, and the rear section of it slides forward. The glass section of the rear hatch opens up and out of the way, and the steel bottom section slides down vertically, to facilitate loading cargo in back.
