BLAINVILLE, QC -
The Government of Canada today announced that road users in Canada will benefit from $14.2 million in improvements at Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Test Centre in Blainville, Quebec.

These improvements, part of the Modernizing Federal Laboratories initiative included in Budget 2009, will update the centre and expand test capability to address emerging opportunities to reduce road safety risks. Findings are shared with the automotive industry to help reduce road casualties.

"These funds will modernize our facility in Blainville and will help reduce road casualties across the country and the world in the longer term," said Canada's Transport Minister, John Baird. "With this funding, our scientists and researchers will have a more modern work environment, which will support research and development leading to better health and safety outcomes for Canadians."

In particular, the improvements include updating the test track and propulsion system, new laboratory space for testing in support of developing new regulations aimed at reducing the number of pedestrian, cyclist and motorcyclist casualties and repaving the surrounding roads.

Transport Canada carries out motor vehicle safety standard compliance testing, crash avoidance and crashworthiness testing at the Motor Vehicle Test Centre, a government-owned, contractor-operated test laboratory. The testing facility, the only one of its kind in Canada, has been in operation since 1978.

In Budget 2009, Canada's Economic Action Plan, the federal government committed to an accelerated investment program to provide $250 million, over the next two years, to modernize federal laboratories. The funding, one of the many job-creating investments in the Economic Action Plan, will improve these facilities while providing economic stimulus in regions across the country.
