Honda Canada's Alliston, Ontario Plant Exports New Cars Throughout the World

What's the number one selling car in Canada? Just try to drive to the corner market without passing by a Honda Civic, now the best seller for five consecutive years. Even first generation cars, now 30 some years old, can still be seen zipping around town in non-snowbelt jurisdictions.

Just how many are out there is hard to say, but at a milestone event Honda Canada Mfg. recently celebrated its two-millionth Civic to roll off the Alliston, Ontario assembly line after 15 years of production. "The Honda of Canada Manufacturing plant began production in 1986 as part of Honda's worldwide commitment to building vehicles close to where they are sold," stated Kalim Ansari, Executive Vice President, Honda Canada Inc. "The plant has steadily grown since that time and is now one of Honda's premier manufacturing facilities."

In case you were doing the math above and noticed that 1986 to 2003 equals 17 years instead of 15, actual Civic production started in 1988 with what was then an all-new Civic. The 3-door hatchback model the facility produced totaled 37,484 units in its first year.

The 2-door Civic coupe was added in 1992, the first year production would surpass 100,000 units per annum. Coupe production lasted three years until 1995, when it was replaced by the much greater selling 4-door sedan, with the one-millionth Canadian-made Civic milestone achieved by 1997.
