The Gist: Two turbochargers, six manually shifted gears, four doors, and four-wheel drive are a delicious recipe for winter driving thrills, and just what the last-generation BMW 335i xDrive offered. Look for top-line traction, looks, handling dynamics, and safety features combined with the legendary feel and reflexes that have defined Germany’s most popular sport-sedan export for generations.

The Test Drive: Start the engine after confirming it hasn’t been pre-warmed, and listen for any unwelcome ticking sounds from the cylinder head. Some owners reported issues with noisy valve lifters, which may require replacement. Ensure all door locks and the trunk release work properly, and inspect the car for chipped paint and cracked or torn leather.

The turbocharged 335i model is noted for excellent performance -- though shoppers should research well-known problems with the fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) before settling on one. Misfire and jerky acceleration can be warning signs. If the model you’re considering has any issues with the above, they should be easy for a mechanic to identify and fix, potentially under warranty. Avoid used models reprogrammed to run higher-than-stock turbo boost for maximum reliability.

Have a mechanic look for signs of both coolant and oil leaks under the hood, especially around the oil pan and oil filter housing. Opt for any extended warranty available to protect yourself from pricey repair bills.
