There are a few stirring Hyundai products to be taken in here at the Vancouver International Auto Show, including the all-new Genesis sports sedan and Elantra Touring, as well as an updated Sonata sedan.

The 2009 Genesis marks Hyundai's first dedicated entry into the premium sedan market. This push is being driven by rear-wheel-drive and a 4.6-litre V8 that is expected to produce 375 horsepower and 333 lb.-ft. of torque while sprinting to 100 km/h in less than six seconds. More economical 3.3- and 3.8-litre V6 engines will also be available, but all powertrains will utilize the same six-speed automatic transmission with shiftronic manual control.

The Genesis will top the good-but-lacklustre front-wheel-drive Azera as Hyundai's flagship sedan. John Krafcik, vice president of Hyundai's product development, says that the Genesis was engineered with such rivals in mind as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS. Evaluating by its attractive exterior, interior, and technological/mechanical specifications, I would consider the Genesis a success (note that its grille, which reminds me of a chef's final touch on a desert plate, lacks a Hyundai logo). Some may claim that the Genesis still won't have the driving characteristics of a comparable BMW, but it isn't expected to cost the same either.

Also all-new for Hyundai is the 2009 Elantra Touring five-door compact. With an efficient use of both space and fuel, this five-passenger vehicle is nice looking and functional. The Elantra Touring is powered by a 2-litre 141 horsepower four cylinder engine, mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. 16-inch alloy wheels are standard, while 17-inch alloys are part of a premium-sport package that also includes a sunroof and heated seats.

The Elantra Touring should also be a safe prospect for families, featuring anti-lock disc brakes with brake force distribution, traction control, stability control, and six airbags. The all-important MP3 CD capability and auxiliary audio input / USB jacks are also standard, but the biggest selling feature might be its 1,800 litres of cargo capacity with the back seats folded down.
