Volkswagen is presenting its new Tiguan GTE Active Concept SUV in a global premiere in the middle of the world’s most important market for SUVs. The North American International Auto Show in Detroit will host the unveiling of the new hybrid this week, with VW promoting the second-generation Tiguan as pushing the boundaries of performance capabilities for a hybrid vehicle.
Running on a gasoline engine working in concert with two electric motors, the new Tiguan GTE Active concept is built to handle tough off-road challenges, with specially designed features – including unique design elements, higher ground clearance and larger angles for approach and departure - that Volkswagen says will be applicable on the eventual production model.
Range for the Tiguan concept when running purely on electricallygenerated power is just over 32 km, with a total range when in hybrid mode of over 930 km; four-wheel drive will be possible at all times even when in electric mode. The Tiguan GTE Active SUV is also equipped with the manufacturer’s recently announced gesture control technology for controlling the infotainment system.
