Volkswagen will introduce the all-new Tiguan this week at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show. Also on display will be the Tiguan GTE plug-in hybrid concept.

As the first Volkswagen Group SUV based on the acclaimed and versatile MQB platform, the next-gen Tiguan is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. While Europeans specs have already been revealed, details about the North American model will be announced in a while.

The Tiguan will make its debut in an R-Line version, a classic on-road version, and a version with an off-road front end. A fourth version will be present as well, namely the Tiguan GTE plug-in hybrid concept achieving 1.9L/100km according to the European test cycle. This one develops 215 horsepower and can cover a distance of up to 50 kilometres in "E-Mode." A 13kWh lithium-ion battery combines with a roof-integrated solar module which alone adds up to 1,000 kilometres of driving range annually.

It’s worth noting that the new VW Tiguan marks the beginning of an SUV product offensive. In upcoming years, the brand will be launching other innovative SUVs that are tailored to specific markets in a wide variety of segments worldwide. For instance, a long-wheelbase Tiguan will go on sale in China and the U.S. in the fall of 2016.

Eight different engines including four gasoline and four diesel units will be available globally, with output ranging from 123-237 horsepower. In some cases, 4MOTION comes standard; in others, it is optional.
In terms of safety, the new Tiguan will offer such advanced technologies as Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, Lane Assist, Side Assist, Pre-Crash Proactive Occupant Protection, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Emergency Assist, and Area View.

Tiguan occupants will revel in the comfort provided by the redesigned seats with optional power adjustment, while the available Smart Comfort Seats automatically travel downward and back to make it easier to enter and exit the vehicle when the ignition is turned off. Meanwhile, the panoramic sunroof will be the largest in the segment.
