There's a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie coming to theatres this month, and Volvo Car Corporation is inviting Canadians to partake in a high-seas treasure hunt to celebrate the film and promote their new XC90 SUV.
Beginning today, the Swedish carmaker is challenging Canadians and entrants from several other countries to try and find the hidden treasure- which consists of $50,000 and the keys to a brand new XC90.
It's the contest's second year, though it wasn't open to Canadians last year.
Aspiring pirates aged 18 or older can sign up for the contest online or visit a Volvo retailer for an entry card until May 29. Then, they turn online to solve a series of puzzles which get harder as they progress. Solving them allows players to catch up with fellow swashbucklers.
Later in June, the most successful pirate from each of 22 countries allowed to participate will move on to one final challenge. Whoever becomes victorious will win a trip to the burial location of the treasure to claim their cash and SUV.
"Last summer, we held a treasure hunt to find a buried Volvo XC90 V8 to tie in with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and were blown away by the success - more than 100,000 participants from around the world joined in," says Linda Gangeri, national advertising manager for Volvo of North America. "This year, with more countries, more booty and all the early interest, we're really excited to 'set sail.' So, come join The Hunt!"
