Volkswagen AG and Toshiba have just signed an agreement to collaborate on the development of electric engines and all the electronics involved in future electric vehicles. The two will also develop high-density battery systems for this next generation of electric vehicles, and are currently fine-tuning the lithium-ion battery technology.
Volkswagen's chairman, Martin Winterkorn, intends to make his company the first manufacturer of affordable zero-emission electric vehicles that are produced on a large scale. He also acknowledges that there is still a lot of work to be done. However, thanks to the know-how of two serious firms like Volkswagen and Toshiba, these goals are within reach.
For Atsutoshi Nishida, president and CEO of Toshiba, a partnership with a company like Volkswagen, a major player in the auto industry, can only prove beneficial. There is no doubt in his mind that both partners will work together in order to offer consumers extremely fuel efficient vehicles that will leave no ecological footprint.
