In April, Volkswagen introduced a rejuvenated Beetle, sportier, more macho and reminiscent of the Ragster concept presented in Detroit in 2005. Since then, there have been several rumours that a high-performance R version will soon crop up as well. According to Car and Driver, these rumours are true, and several VW employees have stated that the automaker has chosen the Frankfurt Motor Show for its coming out.
We can expect to see the 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder mill of the Golf GTI and Golf R powering the Beetle R.
While the engine specs haven’t been released yet, it’s likely that output will be around 240 hp, considering the fact that the GTI generates 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque and the European Golf R (with AWD) punches out 270 hp and 258 lb-ft.
A stiffer suspension and sportier looking seats and cabin should also set it apart from the other versions.
Several sources have confirmed that a convertible Beetle R may well see the light of day as well, though it still hasn’t gotten the go ahead from VW execs.
