For the thirteenth year, Wards has compiled its highly anticipated top-ten list of engines. It's a listing of powerplants that go above and beyond the call of duty, delivering superior efficiency, refinement and performance.

Once again, Audi takes honors with their 2.0 litre turbo engine. Fitted to cars like the A3 and A4, the engine features Fuel Stratified Injection or (FSI) technology. One of the main benefits of FSI is that every molecule of fuel is put to the best possible use, the end result being a plentiful supply of torque and very reasonable fuel mileage.

Rival BMW proudly takes two places on the list this year, with its 3.0 litre inline six from the Z4 3.0si, and the twin-turbocharged 3.0 litre inline six from new 335i. The latter is the first example of twin turbocharging and direct injection coming together under the same hood- the result being 300 horsepower, exceptional smoothness and a broad torque curve.

Daimler Chrysler's HEMI engine made the cut yet again for its 5.7 litre V8 with Multi Displacement System (MDS), which selectively shuts down four cylinders in certain situations to save on fuel. Additionally, the carmaker had their new 3.0 litre turbodiesel V6 engine voted to the list. The diesel engine will be carried in 2007 by the Grand Cherokee CRD.

Ford takes two spots on this years list as well, with both a new and an old engine. The first entry is the 4.6 litre SOHC V8 from the Mustang GT and Mustang Shelby GT. Additionally, the American automakers new 3.5 litre Duratec mill from the Edge and MKX crossover vehicles was also selected.

Mazda's MZR 2.3 litre turbo engine finds itself back again, featuring direct injection and turbocharging for V8 like torque. The engine is now available in the Mazdaspeed 3 and 6, as well as the CX-7 crossover.

A pair of 3.5 litre V6 engines finishes up this years list, with one from Toyota in the Lexus IS350, and the other from Nissan, in the Infiniti G35. Both engines create upwards of 300 horsepower.

For the consumer who places importance on the art of propulsion and focuses in past the glass and plastic, the ten-best list reads like a who's-who of engineering achievements.
