Would you like to win $10 million US? Of course you do. Simply register to the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE competition and build a vehicle that exceeds 100 MPG (the equivalent of 2.4 L/100 km), falls under strict emission caps and finishes in the fastest time.
The X PRIZE Foundation is an educational non-profit organization whose mission is to stimulate radical breakthroughs for the benefit of mankind. Every winner gets a $10 million prize. The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE was instituted as a way to promote the development of extremely fuel-efficient vehicles. Participants will have to complete the race with their environmentally-friendly machines.
Teams from all over the world have already signed Letters of Intent to compete. Among them will be Indian automaker Tata Motors. Each team has to come up with a clean, production-capable vehicle that exceeds 100 MPG and answers the needs of today's market with regard to price, size, safety and performance. Obviously, it must also meet the toughest emission standards.
The competition will include a qualifying session and the actual race. These two long-distance events will take place in the same real-world conditions that most drivers have to deal with on a daily basis. Snow, heat and major inclines will be in the mix. While the competition will be staged in the United States, the exact itinerary has yet to be announced. We do know, however, that it will start in New York City in September 2009.
