Nationals' pitcher Steven Strasburg will receive a 2020 Corvette Stingray as the MVP of the 2019 World Series
This year’s World Series ended Wednesday evening with a dramatic victory by the Washington Nationals over the Houston Astros. The series went the maximum seven games and for the first time in baseball history, the visiting team won every single game.
At the conclusion of the game, the World Series MVP award was handed to Nationals’ pitcher Stephen Strasburg. His reward? A next-generation 2020 Chevrolet Corvette, a car that has been long-anticipated and much-discussed due to its all-new mid-engine configuration. The irony in this case is that the athlete will have to wait a while before his new car is delivered.
And that is because production on the 2020 Corvette has not started yet. What’s more, the recent workers’ strike at GM might delay that production process even further. The original schedule called for production to start before the end of this year.
To many, the other irony in this story is of course the bestowing of a new car on a star athlete who could afford to buy quite a few of them based on his salary – Strasburg’s latest contract, after all, is for $175 million over 6 years.
To be fair, many recipients of new cars to go along with some award or other give them away to their charity of choice. It will be interesting what Strasburg decides to do with this admittedly atypical prize car. Maybe his mother wants it?
In any case, congrats to Chevrolet for the great product placement!
