Japanese car manufacturer Toyota could confirm its World Rally Championship entry in the coming weeks.

Since Toyota left Formula 1 at the end of 2009 season, its sporting department, based in Cologne, Germany, is looking to compete in another motorsport series.

Since the beginning of the season, several members of Toyota Motorsport have been seen in the paddocks of series such as the WTCC, IRC and GT1 World, but it’s actually the WRC championship that seems to have attracted their attention.

Members of Toyota Motorsport, such as technical director Pascal Vasselon, attended the Rally Deutschland to collect information about the World Rally Championship.

Toyota has already had a lot of success in the WRC in the past, as the Japanese company collected several world titles and numerous victories back in the 90’s with the Celica Turbo 4WD, then the Corolla.

The German-based sporting department is rumoured to be waiting for the green light from Tokyo to confirm Toyota’s return in WRC. Toyota is expected to run an Auris model-based car.
