The Draw: Is this the ultimate Canadian car? The Volkswagen Jetta Wagon TDI offered up plenty of space, plenty of sensibility, and the promise of fantastic torque output and fuel mileage thanks to its legendary TDI engine. Most owners say they love the way their Jetta Wagon feels -- in terms of handling, ride quality, steering, and even acceleration. Interior styling, mileage, and a high-quality driving atmosphere are all noted as positives by current owners. Don’t miss high-end features like heated leather seats, automatic climate control, and premium stereo systems.
What to Check: All electronic systems and features should be triple-checked for proper operation, including all windows, power seat adjustments, door locks, hatch release, and remote keyfobs. Note a check-engine light and determine why its illuminated if present. Some owners of models with manual transmissions have complained of premature clutch wear, so check for signs of slippage if you’re in a stick-equipped model. Note that smoke, especially at idle while the engine is warm, could be a sign of a bad turbocharger that’s on its way out. On-time, quality oil changes are key to the longevity of a turbocharger, so be sure the seller was fond of keeping up on this maintenance.
