Though not on the same level as Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt or Tokyo, the Bologna Motor Show, Italy's biggest automotive exhibition will host three brand new Fiat vehicles, all of which are off-roaders. Of the trio, the Fiat

Oltre is the biggest, baddest and oddly enough, the most glamorous. It's Fiat's idea of what an ultimate off-roader ought to be. Therefore, it's no surprise that it's been slated as the show's must-see car.

Likened to the Hummer H1 Alpha, or the extremely rare Lamborghini LM002, the Oltre's design and technology is rooted in the military world. Built in collaboration with Iveco, Fiat's commercial and military arm, it uses the sturdy underpinnings and technology of the latest generation LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle). The LMV is a worthy base: it's gaining recognition and attention as a world-class military vehicle and both the UK and Italy have contracted Iveco for replacing their current tactical mobile vehicles.

It may be hard to believe that a vehicle larger than the H1 exists, but Fiat's utilitarian monster accomplishes this feat. It measures in at a gargantuan 4,870 mm (191.7 in) long, 2,050 mm (80.7 in) tall and 2,200

mm (86.6 in) wide, and if its sheer size isn't enough of an intimidating factor, its menacing appearance ought to be.

This in mind there isn't much here by the way of styling: it consists primarily of geometrical shapes stacked atop a set of huge wheels, although recessed door handles and a variable-length exterior sunshade hint at this heavyweight's functionality.

No joking about the heavyweight title either. The Oltre weights in at a scale-busting seven tonnes (7.7 U.S. tons)!
