So long, old friend
So, the B4000 we’re testing here costs $27,875, which excludes freight, PDI and A/C tax; we’re now a long way from the $16K base price. The competition obviously includes the Ford Ranger, which will end its production run after 2011, but also the Chevrolet Colorado, the GMC Canyon, the Nissan Frontier and the Toyota Tacoma, all of which are more modern, bigger and more refined but will cost a few grand more with a similar level of equipment.

And honestly, if the sheer bulk of a full-size pickup doesn’t worry you, an F-150, a Silverado or a Ram 1500 can be yours for about the same price as a compact pickup, especially if you’re good at negotiating.

Bottom line: it may be old, but the B-Series can still perform its pickup-truck duties at a lower price than the competition and 0% financing. Our materialist side might instantly dismiss it, since it looks 15 years old even though it’s brand-new. But if all you need is a dependable vehicle that can tow your trailer as well as haul your recreational vehicle or the equipment you use on an everyday basis for work, Mazda’s pickup will handle it. Just get one now before they’re gone for good.
