Volkswagen has announced further details on their latest Polo- a car the German manufacturer says has the most mature and high-end image in its class. Set for launch at this weeks Geneva Motor Show, a press release yesterday highlighted improvements made to safety, fuel economy and performance.

Volkswagen Polo

Fifth-generation Polo owners will benefit from improved crash safety performance and a slew of standard safety features designed to enhance peace of mind. The body structure, for instance, was engineered to meet stricter and more comprehensive European crash-test ratings. ESP, Hill Hold Control, active head restraints and a full network of airbags are standard.

Engineers also managed to trim the Polo's weight by 7.5 percent, an attribute that works towards improved fuel economy when paired with the advanced new dual-clutch 7-speed transmission. Gas and diesel powerplants will be available spanning a wide range of power outputs, too. One engine of note is a new 1.2 litre turbocharged mill with 105 horsepower. This TFSI engine can turn in mileage as low as 5.5L 100km.

Expect the options list to include items like a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon lights, navigation and a bluetooth cellular phone interface.

Production starts this month, with market launch in June. The Polo could even wind up in Canada, too.
