Ford has recently announced that a new technology called Eco-Boost is coming to their engines, and that they hope to install it to a half-million vehicles over the next five years. A family of four and 6 cylinder engines, Ford's tapping into the potential of combining direct-injection and turbocharging in the name of performance and mileage.

"Eco-Boost is meaningful because it can be applied across a wide variety of engine types in a range of vehicles, from small cars to large trucks - and it's affordable," said Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development.

Bringing the technology public is the automakers Explorer America concept- which utilizes the new Eco-Boost engine lineup alongside some other environmentally conscious features to deliver a fuel economy boost of about 20 to 30 percent, depending on the engine selected.

Engine choices are a 2.0 litre, 275 horsepower four cylinder or a 3.5 litre V6 with about 340 horsepower. A fuel efficient 6-speed automatic handles power delivery duty, while an electric power steering system makes sure more of the engines power makes it to the road. The concept also rides a new, lighter unibody construction.

"We know that what will make the biggest difference is applying the right technology on volume vehicles that customers really want and value and can afford," said Kuzak. "EcoBoost puts an affordable technology within reach for millions of customers, and Ford's systems approach adds up to a big idea that differentiates Ford's sustainability strategy in the market."
