Porsche will unveil a new version of the 911 Carrera Targa at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 11 (probably at 9:11 a.m., to match the 9.11 date), though there's no word yet on when it will arrive in Canada and how much it will cost.

Bob Carlson of Porsche Cars North America makes the obvious point that the Targa will offer Porsche customers a third 911 Carrera body style, but he adds that the Targa will "introduce some unique attributes" as well.

Porsche currently offers 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet models, but has not offered a 911 Targa in North America since 1997.

According to Carlson, the all-new Targa "expands on the concept of the previous model, which featured a large power-operated glass roof that slid under the rear window. In the all-new 911 Carrera Targa, the sliding glass roof panel covers more than 0.45 square meters, or about twice the area of the standard sunroof on the 911 Carrera Coupe."

Two electric motors open the glass roof "almost silently," Carlson promises.

Carlson says the biggest difference from the previous 911 Carrera Targa is that the rear window in the new model is hinged to open, "providing convenient access to the rear luggage compartment."

In the new 911 Carrera Targa, folding the rear seatbacks provides access to 230 liters of cargo space, compared to 201 liters in the 911 Carrera Coupe.
