2000 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi - The 4-Door Muscle car

The first car I can remember was my Mom's 1961 Pontiac Strato-Chief wagon. I thought it was the coolest ride anywhere. It was long, wide and kept up to my mother's 'need-for-speed' right foot. That car took us everywhere. It was the family's 'sport-utility' vehicle, traipsing across the unpaved Chilcotin Highway 300 miles into nowhere, escorting our family to uncharted wilderness destinations that 4-wheel drive machines of the day were wary to venture. Eventually, the old beast was sent out to pasture and a slick fire engine red '69 Pontiac Parisienne Coupe arrived at our door. That car had more style than anything else in the neighborhood. Once again pride was restored to the Hofmann household.

I guess you could say that we were a Pontiac family. Over the years we replaced our cars, and every time it was a product designed and built by the General - except for my Dad's love affair with European cars. Parked beside the trusty GM was first a Morris Minor, then a Volkswagen Beetle and eventually a silver metallic VW Scirocco. My Mom and Dad still drive GM's to this day. They've long since separated, remarried and led extremely different lives, yet what they choose to drive has pretty much stayed the same.

For this reason I had been looking forward to driving the [linka rtid="545"]Pontiac Bonneville[/link] SSEi. One of my closest friends had an 80's variation that we clocked a fair number of miles on over the years. Although slightly over the top in the 'boy-racer' styling department, the racy interior and over-zealous exterior body cladding was fortunately matched by a competent chassis and adequate power. The big 'Bonny' performed impressively all the way past 300,000 km on the odometer.
