It's always a good idea to have your potential used vehicle candidate inspected by a mechanic before agreeing to purchase it. Under the Rendesvous's hood, said mechanic may find a problem that's been dubbed the 'Dex-Cool Salute' by those whom have been afflicted by it. This common problem may require an expensive intake manifold gasket job- as GM's specially formulated coolant is known to slowly eat gaskets and aluminum parts for lunch.
Apparently, changing out factory Dex-Cool coolant in the 3.4 liter engine is a good idea if the leak hasn't made itself visible yet- though check with your mechanic first.
Later in the machines life, a 3.6 liter, Cadillac-derived V6 was available for some more power, and the 3.4 liter V6 was dropped in favor of a four-cam 3.5 liter unit.
Selection is great for used Rendezvous buyers- but a few common problems are noteworthy. A wheel bearing and wheel speed sensor assembly in the rear is a known issue. On a test-drive, leave a window rolled down and listen closely at low speeds for a groaning or grinding sound from the back of the vehicle.
If you're looking at an all wheel drive model, a control valve failure is common as well. It's not as bad as it may sound, and it can generally be repaired for about $200 to $300.
Fuel system issues deal with pressure-release devices which may become defective and owners on several forums discuss a faulty fuel level sensor that is commonly replaced. Other owners report replacing entire defective fuel tanks.
A portion of the problem was the fuel pressure regulator unit being built and installed without an O-Ring- which could lead to leaks and possibly start a fire. In 2007, GM issued the recall on 2005 and newer models- so check to see if the work has been carried out.
Air conditioning failure is another common issue. Apparently, the Rendezvous is known to be fitted with less than long-lasting air conditioning componentry, and many owners complain of premature failure of the system accompanied by expensive repair bills. On a test-drive, make sure that the air conditioning quickly begins blowing ice-cold when turned on.
Last of the main concerns, a frontal airbag problem may prevent sensors from detecting an occupant if an aftermarket seat cover is used. In this situation, the airbag would not deploy. There's a recall associated with this issue as well.
In all, a used Rendezvous comes off as a bit of a mixed bag. Be sure to check for the completion of recall work and ask a mechanic to look for signs of the notorious head-gasket leak first and foremost. Despite a few noteworthy problems, the Rendezvous offers a level of uniqueness, luxury and capability that are hard to match in a used family machine.
