When people start talking about the best choices in the mid-size sedan category, the same names always come up: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry. Switch the conversation over to mid-size wagons, however, and people start to hesitate. The two heavyweights mentioned above don't have a wagon counterpart anymore.

As a result, the Legacy wagon is in a more comfortable situation than the sedan.

The Legacy is the only wagon in this price range, other than the Dodge Magnum, to offer AWD.

Small for a mid-sizer
Step out of a Camry and step into a Legacy, and you'll think someone forgot it in the dryer too long. It still fits, and the size of this Subaru suits me fine, but when compared back to back with other mid-size sedans and wagons, it's tight inside.

Although you're closely surrounded by the dashboard, it's very attractive. The combination of dark grey and silver is tasteful, while every switch and button feels solid and expensive. The 2.5GT model gets a MOMO leather-wrapped steering wheel and perforated leather seats, which are pretty good.

The rocker switches for the heated seats have been relocated from the middle of the centre console to the base of the armrest, to make room for the SI-DRIVE knob. Overall, there doesn't seem to be any ergonomic flaws with the Legacy's interior, although for the price, I would've liked to have audio controls on the steering wheel instead of two sets of buttons to manually change gears.

The cargo hold of the Legacy wagon is spacious, despite the pronounced angle of the liftgate. Also, the huge two-section power sunroof is great, as it brightens up the cockpit for everyone.

The Legacy wagon offers 949L of cargo space (1851L with rear seat down).
