The first generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander was introduced as a 2003 model year and, at the time, it was smaller than most other compact SUVs. Styling and performance sure were interesting, but the size issue always seemed to cast a shadow over these qualities. The automaker wrongfully believed that the market could welcome a new segment between small sedans and compact SUVs; as it turned out, the first Outlander never really managed to stand out in the minds of customers.

Now in its second generation, the Mitsubishi Outlander finds itself in a better position to take on competitors.

But now, Mitsubishi enjoys new momentum and sales are increasing. A big part of that success can be traced to the completely-revamped, second-generation Outlander.

Unmistakably Mitsubishi
In terms of design, the Outlander is easy to recognize with clear taillight lenses and sculpted body lines. Curves are virtually nowhere to be found, which is a good thing as it creates a sharp, purposeful package.

Inside, the thing that strikes you the most is the ultra-clean dashboard, which has been stripped down of all unnecessary gadgets. The combination of metal and plastics is attractive and, overall, the layout is quite well-executed. The controls and buttons are easy to reach, especially those of the climate control system. The latter is powerful and quiet, cooling the entire cabin in a short amount of time.

Once you sit inside, you immediately notice that there's plenty of room both up front and in the back. Legroom and shoulder room, in particular, are more than satisfying. Having said that, the third-row bench in my XLS tester was rather useless.

Access to the cargo area has been cleverly thought out. The liftgate panel is divided into two sections, which makes loading items easier. Cargo capacity is decent, but it would have been greater without the two third-row seats. Meanwhile, the other seats are well designed; they prove comfortable and easy to adjust.

Inside, the thing that strikes you the most is the ultra-clean dashboard.
