This time we are moving a little upscale and closer to real world application. This is perhaps our personal favourite of the group as it really requires no adjustments period. It is the BMW 120d. Elsewhere in the World, BMW offers an entry-level 1-Series. As per usual, it available with a multitude of engines ranging from a gas-powered 115 hp 1.6L 4-cylinder to a 265 hp 3.0L inline 6-cylinder. The tested 120d has a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder diesel engine. It puts out 163 hp and 251 lb/ft of torque. The variable turbine geometry adjusts the characteristics of the exhaust-driven turbocharger to the engine's current running condition. The transmission is a regular 6-speed manual. The rest is regular BMW specs: 4-wheel disc brakes, a fully independent suspension and all the safety features one would expect.

What we really like about the 120d is the fact that it behaves like a regular BMW. Steering is spot-on sharp and precise with positive feedback. The brake pedal is firm backed by impressive stopping performance. The 2.0L is amazingly strong. It literally has enough torque to launch the small Bimmer into orbit and will reach 100 km/h in 7.9L. Everything else about the 1-series is just right: the size, the fact that it is a 5-door hatchback and the very low fuel consumption. The ATV program has rated the car's average fuel consumption at 5.7L/100 km.
