The 1995 model year brought an updated convertible and a sportier low-pressure turbocharged 185-hp 2.0-L 4-cylinder with 194 lb-ft of torque. The turbo was only offered in 2-door hatchback guise, finished in SE trim. All cars received better ABS brakes in the 1996 model year though, which improved again in 1997 to include larger diameter rotors. This same year brought redesigned front seats as well. Model year 1998, the final year of production for a model designation that nearly reached 20 years, also saw the phase out of the V6 engine.

What about reliability? Unfortunately Saab 900 coupes and 4-doors were plagued with seven recalls in 1994 alone, but the highest number of vehicles affected reached only 940. Four of the 1994 recalls also affected 1995 models, while two were specific to the more recent model year. What's more, the new convertible had a recall all its own. Model year 1996 saw only one new recall, while two previous ones carried forward. The same two recalls affected 1997 cars, while 1998 900s hung on to only one recall while receiving an entirely new one only affecting the last model year of 900 production. Got that? If there's any confusion check the recall information portion of this web site.

While recalls aren't necessarily a sign of reliability, they are an indication of what could be a troublesome car. Adding to that is a higher cost for parts and service than average. But pre-owned Saab buyers don't necessarily purchase their vehicles only for A to B transportation. Performance, safety and exclusivity rate higher on their lists.
