Our stay at the Snow Country Cottage was comfortable and the breakfast was fabulous. As an added bonus, we enjoyed the company of a family of Australian ski-bums, the youngest of which was a car fanatic of the most respectable level. He managed to persuade me into taking him on an entertaining 'roller coaster' ride up the highway north of Whistler, where we encountered much less traffic.
The C4's smooth shifting 6-speed transmission is a pleasure to run through the gears. It literally snaps from one position to the next, promoting confidence behind the wheel. Is a 6-speed necessary in a car with this much torque available from as low down as 1500rpm? Probably not. Yet, running through all six gears nearing redline between intervals is intoxicating.
If you prefer the driving ease of an automatic Porsche makes the Tiptronic, one of the best semi-automatics in the industry. It allows you the control of a manual with the added benefits of an automatic. Porsche sells more manuals of course, but the Tiptronic has become popular, as news has spread of its excellent mix of convenience and sporting characteristics.
James and I returned from our morning jaunt with grins plastered across our faces and the look of guilty indulgence in our eyes. By the way my young Aussie friend, don't forget you owe me a ride in a hot Holden when I get down under.
Traffic had subsided by the return trip and we were able to make excellent time despite the inclement weather conditions. With effortless power on tap, heroic levels of grip and the poise and grace of a supermodel, the Porsche 911 C4 is one of the most dynamic vehicles available from any manufacturer. That said, it's exceptionally tame in city traffic too. What possibly could be better? A turbo? We'll have to leave that one until next winter.
