Similar to Chrysler's minivans the Audi's tailgate can be opened by an electro-hydraulic mechanism via a remote access key. Furthermore the cargo floor can also be slid out by up to 460 mm (18.1 in) electrically, providing additional storage. For more space the rear seats can be folded forward extending the loading area by 750 mm (29.5 in). Setting the Avantissimo apart from mere mortal wagons the load-area is leather-trimmed. It also includes aluminum rails, like the Audi allroad, improving the load area's functionality.

Giving the interior an airy ambience, continuous dimming glass covers large sections of the roof. Following the lead of the A8's solar panel glass sunroof the Avantissimo sports the same photo-voltaic element technology, but over a much larger area. Solar energy powers the ventilation system's blower to maintain a cool interior in hot weather when the engine is not running. At night, the glass panels emit a soft indirect lighting that illuminates the interior uniformly but without glare.

Keeping all these features operating simultaneously is Audi's MMI control concept. MMI stands for 'Multi Media Interface', redefining the link between the driver and car's information and communication electronics.

The interface selects and operates all the infotainment devices such as the audio system, TV and DVD player as well as the car phone, navigation system and Internet access. Just press a button and select within a specific menu via a large rotary knob or the surrounding buttons. Information is displayed on a monitor in the driver's direct field of view. A variety of steering wheel mounted buttons add to the convenience.

New security measures have also been included in the Avantissimo. Only authorized drivers need try to start the engine due to its automatic remote signal sensor in the key. Not good enough? A fingerprint scanner is provided for even more exacting individual driver identification. Once identified, the driver's seat position, air-conditioning settings and previously chosen MMI configuration are reselected.

Also similar to the A8, the Avantissimo improves on Audi's Space Frame (ASF) aluminum construction, yielding superb structural rigidity while maintaining an extremely low curb weight.

Audi has been lauded by more critics than only me regarding its superb quality of interior materials and precise fit and finish. Of course the Avantissimo is luxurious too, yet even more so than its A8 sibling, incorporating seating for only four - that incidentally massage occupants. The classically styled electrically adjustable seats are wide and deep and surrounded in just about every conceivable luxury feature.
