Like all Audis the Avantissimo is mechanically athletic. That said the Avantissimo takes this to new heights. A 4.2-L 'biturbo' V8 develops more than 430-hp and 443 lb-ft of maximum torque, quite a bit more than the already potent S8 sedan. A new 6-speed automatic transmission uses steering column mounted shift paddles, or a conventional console mounted shift lever, to select gears. Of course, the inclusion of quattro permanent all-wheel drive means that all four tires receive power for optimal adhesion to the road in any whether condition. For added traction, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with hydraulic Brake Assist (BA) is included.
Of course AWD and electronic systems can't do everything necessary to keep a car on the road therefore Audi has incorporated a suitably advanced suspension system. A 4-link front setup should make for sharp turn in, excellent high-speed tracking and a comfortable ride while a trapezoidal-link suspension with separate springs and shock absorbers keep the rear end in check.
At 5,060 mm (199.2 in) the Avantissimo is no shrinking violet. It makes an impressive statement in both size and styling that no doubt will reflect on the upcoming A8 sedan. But is it likely to see production? Like I mentioned in the beginning of this review, this will depend on Audi's marketing department. If Audi decides to go ahead and build the Avantissimo, which would most likely receive the A8 Avant nameplate, Audi will fill a niche in the market not currently occupied. What about the technology? Most of it will be included in the next generation A8 sedan, you can be sure, while quite a few features will trickle down to the brands less expensive models, in time.
The luxury market is beginning to experience a renaissance, the likes that haven't been seen since the dawn of the motoring age. The Avantissimo would only add to Audi's upscale image while broadening the common definition of a luxury car. It's an exciting time to be a car enthusiast.
