Additional improvements have been made to the Tahoe's exterior too. New double-door seals reduce interior noise levels and redesigned rear door hinges improve access and durability. Also high strength, dent resistant steel body panels are now covered with higher quality basecoat/clearcoat paints (not previously a GM forte, their 1991 gray metallic that tended to peal off in sheets comes to mind).

Two engines are available. The Vortec 4800 is standard in the base Tahoe, and the 5300 standard in the LS and LT. The 5300's 285 horsepower and 325 lb ft of torque could pull a tree out from the roots, not to mention tow up to 3,946 kg (8,700 lbs) of trailer. Both engines are smooth running with proven reliability and achieve fairly good fuel economy at 16.8/13.1 L/ 100km or 14/18 mpg (city/highway), especially considering the sheer mass of the vehicle in question - at 2317 kg (5108 lb). All this power transfers from engine bay to rear wheels via a smooth operating 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

Inside, the Tahoe is cavernous to say the least. An optional third row 50/50 split bench ups capacity to nine adults seated comfortably. With the 2nd row folded forward and the 3rd row of seats removed, the Tahoe can accommodate a whopping 3 cubic meters (104.6 cubic feet) of cargo through the rear tailgate. Our test vehicle had optional leather, adding a luxurious ambience to what might otherwise come across as a work truck. Taking it further from its pick-up truck roots, heated 6-way power adjustable front seats are extremely comfortable and offer a commanding view of the road below. The Tahoe's automatic climate control is easy to operate and functions well, both defrosting the windshield and heating up or cooling down the cabin quickly, depending on when and where you're driving. Rear temperature controls help to keep passengers comfortable as well. GM's leading OnStar GPS system is a must if you're planning on going off into the wilderness or just trying to find the school field for little Joey's soccer game. The 126-watt audio system with CD and cassette is more than adequate for all except the most discriminating of audiophiles. An optional tinted glass sunroof with retractable sunshade completes the package.
