It would be reasonable to surmise that such poundage would make the 7 cumbersome through tight corners, but its 104 km/h (64.9 mph) slalom speed testifies exactly the opposite is true. A diet might make it more nimble, but part of its bulk is directly attributable to its rigid construction and sophisticated suspension, steering, traction and braking technology, contributing to its 49 percent front, 51 percent rear weight distribution. The suspension is made up of MacPherson struts with double-pivot lower links up front and a multi-link system in the rear. Aluminum is the metal of choice for the front subframe, lower arms, strut housings and steering knuckles, as it is for the rear subframe and links. Handling can be improved further with optional Electronic Damping Control, a technology that maintains optimal shock absorber valving. Even without EDC, body lean is virtually nonexistent due in part to Active Roll Stabilization, a standard feature.
The use of aluminum brake calipers reduces weight even further, helping the 745i stop from 128.7 km/h (80 mph) in only 64.3 meters (211 ft), besting most sports cars! What's more, when the ABS system is activated the rear fog lamp flashes with the brake lights to warn tailgating drivers. Speaking of lights, when the high-tech lighting system detects a bulb is burned out, it appropriates nearby bulbs to assume responsibility until replacement.
While technology seems to rule supreme, the big BMW hasn't forgotten its manners inside the cabin. Its quality of interior materials and build execution is outstanding. Rich, sumptuous leathers, beautifully finished woods and finely crafted metal trim enhance all surfaces. The multi-adjustable front seats even include headrests that adjust to cup the back of the head - thoughtful. Fold down the lavishly appointed rear armrest, and the back seats take on the ambience of an executive jet. The optional Premium package improves the audio system and adds electric rear and side window sunshades, park distance control and self-leveling suspension. Active ventilated front seats can be chosen separately, or by opting for the Executive package, which makes the Premium package redundant also, the standard reclining rear seats can be heated too.
