Pulling heavily from the Liberty parts bin the Compass employs Jeep's 210-hp 3.7-L V6. It's a strong engine offering more torque, at 235 lb-ft, than the brand's old 4.0-L inline six while improving fuel economy and emissions. Like the Liberty the concept incorporates an independent front suspension but that's where the similarities end. The Compass incorporates a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension setup for improved high-speed control and enhanced ride characteristics. Without the necessity to withstand the twisting and jarring of off-road use Jeep was able to lighten up the concept's drive system too, while permanent all-wheel drive replaced the traditional part-time 4-wheel drive.

Jeep's Compass has a footprint approximately the same size as its Liberty but a length that is shortened to just over that of the TJ, making it quite compact. That should make its power to weight ratio intriguing. Jeep estimates a 9 second 0 to 60 mph (96.6 km/h) sprint and a 17-second quarter mile. Its top speed should be about (110 mph), which is a far cry faster than I'd want to take a TJ.

While its 20 x 8.5-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 235/55R20 Goodyear tires look impressive a production Compass would probably receive 16s in base trim and maybe 18s fully loaded. No doubt the young guns that would opt for this model would pay more for larger tires and wheels, so it is possible Jeep is considering something bigger so as to not loose possible upgrades to aftermarket suppliers.
