Another problem relates to the Accord's brakes. If test-driving a used model, pay extra attention to the brake-pedal feel during a moderately quick stop from highway speeds. If you notice any combination of a dull shudder, a vibration throughout the vehicle and a low-pitched rumble, the rotors are likely warped. Owners perceive poor brake-part quality from Honda pads and rotors that wear prematurely and warp easily. Premium aftermarket replacement parts can help prevent premature wear.

A strange vibration and clicking, grinding noises as the car is first started and driven is likely a self-check of the car's ABS system and no cause for alarm.

The largest and most discussed problem relates to a more common than comforting failure rate for models equipped with an automatic transmission. Symptoms reported include sporadic shifting, failure to shift or 'slipping'-whereby the car would behave as though it was in neutral, even when in gear. Owners report a high-pitched whining noise as a final warning before an internal bearing fails, locking up the transmission and wheels, and resulting in a loss of control.

Owners report having good luck getting Honda to rectify the situation- as it appears to have been a well known and documented problem. When test driving, turn off the stereo and climate control and listen very closely for any strange noises or sensations from the transmission. Shifts should be firm and relatively quick- and any slipping or unwelcome sounds are a bad sign.

A recall was issued to remedy this problem. Basically, it involved a transmission inspection followed by the installation of an additional oil-jet to help lubricate and cool the affected parts inside the gearbox. During the transmission inspection, if damage was detected, the transmission would be replaced. Be sure to see if the car's former owner(s) have had this work performed.

After choosing the best model for your needs, be sure to check for proper operation of electronic components, brake feel and the condition of the transmission. Your dealership may be able to tell if recall work has been performed.

If your used model checks out with a green light, don't hesitate to snatch one up if the price is right.
