Acura wasn't clear on the Concept TL's drivetrain, but be sure it sports something close to the current 260-hp 3.2-L V6 in the TL Type-S. That would mate it up to a 5-speed automatic transmission with one of the best sequential manual shifting modes available today. Fat dual exhaust pipes take care of engine waste, which is expected to be at least ULEV emissions standard.

While talking concept, an Acura spokesman did tease us with a few real 2004 TL features. Confirmed for this fall, when it goes on sale, is the world's first automotive application of multichannel DVD Audio 5.1, Bluetooth wireless telephone connectivity and XM Satellite radio.

But while techno goodies improve convenience, it's styling that often pulls customers into the dealership. With that in mind I'm sure Acura fans will be pleased with the new design. It doesn't sway too far from tradition yet is persuasively different from the current car. Its trapezoidal grille is still too easily confused with some of Honda's products and most of Mazda's lineup, probably not a good way to build brand awareness. But other than that it's an attractive car.
