Adding Some Go-Fast Style to the Aging TL

The regular 2003 Acura TL Type S is a good looking car, despite its age. Still, some potential buyers would rather have a little more premium style for its premium price.

You might not notice the TL as it goes by. While arguably attractive, its clean, understated lines don't draw a lot of attention. Even in racy Type S trim it's a bit of a sleeper. But that's OK for those who like driving through life's roadways undetected.

While such anonymity is a bonus to some, other potential buyers simply don't notice the nondescript sedan. In an attempt to garner some well deserved attention, Acura is readying a few go-fast styling enhancements in a special limited package.

The first thing to notice on the A-Spec is a distinct lack of chrome trim, excepting a thin strip spanning the grille opening. Subtle ground effects extend the lower front fascia and skirt the rocker panels. European side marker lights and unique 7-spoke wheels finish off the changes, at least from frontal view.

The Type S A-Spec doesn't improve on the regular Type S performance parts. Its free revving VTEC 6-cylinder stays intact as does its sensational "Sequential SportShift" 5-speed automatic. The A-Spec is all about aerodynamic aids and a large dose of style. A front air dam, side skirts and rear skirts join an exclusive rear spoiler with twin accent lights. Distinct 7-spoke alloy wheels receive 215/50 R17 all-season tires - the same as the regular Type-S. European-style side markers are accompanied by equally unique blue or black masked headlights, depending on either of two exterior color choices, Aegean Blue Pearl and Nighthawk Black Pearl. Additionally, the A-Spec gets the appropriate exterior badge.
