While ABS is available no rear discs are offered, reducing braking feel as well as performance. Power assisted rack-and-pinion steering is standard but Buick has dropped its Magnasteer speed-sensitive variable effort option for 2003 models. On the positive both front and rear suspension systems are independent, with a MacPherson strut and stabilizer bar setup in the former and a tri-link design with coil-over struts and a stabilizer bar in the latter. While adequate in corners the Century was designed with ride comfort in mind and delivers on its promises.
Its trunk is fairly large at 473 L (16.7 cu ft), identical to the Toyota Camry's but larger than the Honda Accord's 399 L (14.0 cu ft) volume by 74 L (2.7 cu ft). With these two alternative manufacturers in mind the midsize Buick is up against some extremely stiff competition that is now fully entrenched in the older generation's mindset. While the mild facelift will pull its share of faithful Buick fans into showrooms this year, GM will need to completely transform the Century to keep it current if it plans on vying for customers in 2005, let alone 2036.
That said there is a new excitement at General Motors led by new product initiatives from all the family brands. With Oldsmobile being phased out in 2004 more money and energy will be made available to Buick to return it to its former glory. For now the midsize Century offers elegant styling, luxurious appointments and V6 performance for a very reasonable price, zero percent financing incentives notwithstanding.
